The name of this town probably derives from the Latin word “exitus” (meaning “exit”) because of its position as a mountain pass of the Apennines, like a sort of “gate among the peaks”. It is the starting point of adventurous and beautiful excursions to the Sibillini Mountains. The town consists of 12 centres from which it is possible to reach many peaks such as Monte Bove and Monte Bicco. Once you reach them, you will be able to admire the main valleys and hills sloping down towards the Adriatic Sea. It is a well-known winter resort: the hamlet called Frontignano welcomes tourists all year. Ussita was the birthplace of Cardinal Gasparri, who, as Secretary of State of the Pope, signed in 1929 the Lateran Treaty, an agreement between the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See. A collection of documents recording his work can be found in the town hall.
The visitIn the hamlet Sasso there is the Romanesque church of Santa Lucia (13th century). It houses a painting (17th century) representing Saint Lucy and some frescoes dating back to the 15th century. In the hamlet Pieve there is the Gothic church of Santa Maria Assunta (14th century). The façade consists of an elliptical portal with two mullions, a central rose window, two lateral windows with pinnacles and a series of grey stone arches. Inside the town hall you can see a tempera painting (15th century) depicting the Crocefissione con la Vergine Maria e san Giovanni and two frescoes (15th century) attributed to Paolo da Visso. In the hamlet Pieve you can visit the church dedicated to Sant' Antonio da Padova. It has a beautiful travertine portal with spiral columns. Along the Ussita brook, it is possible to see a stone building that was once a fulling mill used in paper or wool manufacturing. In Casali you can visit the church of the Santi Vincenzo and Anastasio built in 1093: it presents a beautiful semicircular apse with single lancet windows and a portal with a denticulate arch.

Frontignano (1342 m above sea level) is one of the most important ski resorts of central Italy due to its ski lifts, its 20 km of tracks and its accommodations. Ussita is the starting point of many excursions (trekking, nordic walking, mountain bike) to the Sibillini Mountains.
